Ubersense, the sports technology company that helps athletes improve at any sport, today announced that it has raised a $1.1M seed funding round from Atlas Venture, Google Ventures, Boston Seed Capital and various prominent angel investors. The TechStars Boston 2012 company has created a mobile video and collaboration platform that makes it easy for coaches at all levels, from parents to Olympic trainers, to help athletes in any sport get better - anytime, anywhere. Olympic teams from around the world including USA Gymnastics and USA Volleyball used Ubersense to train for London 2012.
Using an iPhone or iPad with the Ubersense app, coaches or athletes can video-tape and analyze their technique, compare themselves with pros, track their progress; coaches and peers can provide feedback not only in-person, but remotely.
The Ubersense app’s main feature and most powerful asset is its innovative video-based feedback experience, called Uberview. An Uberview can contain a coach’s audio feedback, instructive drawings, alterations to video playback, and even comparisons; all are easily captured into an Uberview video that they can easily be shared with an athlete, parent, or peer in-person or remotely. For instance, a PGA Pro can create Uberviews to help clients review and practice their swings before the next class; a high-school baseball coach can create Uberviews to help students visualize the progress they’ve made on their pitching action; or a gymnastics coach can compare students’ landing off a balance beam to that of Aly Raisman.
“Video feedback is an important tool in skill development”, says Jamie Morrison, Assistant Coach of the USA women’s national volleyball team. “It has allowed us to connect how an athlete feels they are performing a skill with what it actually looks like as well as what it should look like. Through ease of use and a low cost, Ubersense puts that valuable tool into the hands of all coaches, parents and athletes.”
Seeing is believing. By enabling athletes to observe their own performance, Ubersense helps them improve better and faster, like never before possible. More than 6 Million videos have already been created using the Ubersense app, across the 800,000 downloads by coaches and athletes in 20+ sports; with golf, baseball, and gymnastics being the most popular. "Ubersense helps you raise your game", says Krishna Ramchandran, co-founder and CEO of Ubersense. “Our investors have contributed to building some of the most successful consumer companies and we are thrilled to have them on our team as we build out the product and company.”
Ubersense was founded in early 2011 by Krishna and Amit Jardosh. The idea of the Ubersense app came out of a personal need to improve at golf using just their iPhones as video and collaboration devices. While the app was created for golf, they soon realized that the thousands of downloads per day from around the world were from coaches and athletes at all levels using it for all kinds of sports, even champion equestrian vaulting. Seeing this trend, Krishna and Amit soon quit their full-time jobs at Citrix Online and Yahoo respectively. Since then, their seven-member team’s core focus has been to gain a deep understanding of the process of coaching and to develop a product that coaches want to use every day with incredible ease and effectiveness.
With powerful computing and video capture devices such as iPads and iPhones, flexible cloud platforms, and the adoption of social networks, Ubersense is changing the way we learn sports forever. It enables the weekend warrior athlete to attain maximum potential while also helping the next national and Olympic champions realize their dreams. Today, Ubersense is also announcing that the app can be downloaded free for a limited amount of time at http://bit.ly/ubersense_app.
Two-time Olympian and now Ubersense investor, Ty Danco says: “Immediately after I saw Ubersense, I downloaded the app and showed it to an old friend who is a U.S. Olympic team coach. Soon thereafter, the team stopped lugging around expensive, heavy video equipment, replacing it with iPads loaded with Ubersense. Today, many elite teams are using it, and I am delighted to be an investor.”

There is an ever-growing explosion of new devices that are connected to the Internet using “cloud” solutions. This rapid growth is creating a massive new demand for efficient access to data. And it’s not just about connecting to that data anymore. This new demand is bringing new issues and challenges and it is important for companies to scale for the coming growth. And with that scaling comes the need for greater security, gathering and data analysis, storage, connectivity and, of course, the...
