Power sipping smartphones possible, iOS 6.1 Beta out and more

  • A Startup Says it’s Cracked a Decades-old Efficiency Problem with Wireless Communications. Eta Devices, formerly of MIT, have identified the potential to limit the power suck of power amplifiers in mobile devices. They have a new amplifier design that will first be rolled out to LTE base stations, and the mobile sized version could double battery life in smartphones. Via Technology Review, more here.
  • Google Now is apparently equipped with a pedometer, but it isn’t accurate… - if you opt-in to Google location services (just check or uncheck the box) they will send details on your whereabouts back to the mothership routinely. Apparently, they have initiated a pedometer into Google Now. While it is cool, it’s really inaccurate, but one that worked would be a feature a ton of people would enjoy (I believe).   • Apple has seen a surge in NA mobile web traffic since the iPhone 5 launch - the iPhone 5 was the first iPhone to use LTE, which makes the internet way better on Verizon and Sprint. Chitika, the traffic advertising network and research firm, saw that Apple had over 65% of the traffic it monitors. Via TechCrunch, more here.
  • iOS 6.1 beta has been relased to developers - The update has been pushed to developers, with a huge number of devices it is available for. One key inclusion was an improved Map Kit for developers. Via 9to5Mac, more here.
  • iOS 6.0.1 has been released to consumers - in news that matters to a lot more people, Apple has released a 70MB iOS update chock full of bug fixes. The update fixes a host of bugs and should improve your iDevice experience. Via 9to5Mac, more here.
  • A system dump of LG Nexus 4 is now available - yesterday, the camera app was released, and rooted users could install the new camera on the Galaxy Nexus (and some other devices). Today, the complete system dump (ie: every system application) is available, so if you are rooted, check it out. Via Droid-Life, more here.
  • T-Mobile won’t allow Nexus 4 Wi-Fi calling - look folks, please please please do not buy the Nexus 4 from T-Mobile. At most, you will save $150, to get on a 2 year contract. If you want T-Mobile, get the device from the Play Store, and use Straight Talk, or get on Straight Talk AT&T, and save a bundle of money. Via Endgadget, more here.
  • Amazon unveils Black Friday website, today - Black Friday has grown to Cyber Monday, and umm shopping November? But Amazon is unveiling their deals ahead of time, including a deal of the day. Via BetaNews, more here.
  • Special Deal of the Day - we thought it would be fun to add in a deal of the day, but only if we liked it.
