Magellan Extends Care Coaching Reach with OneHealth® Online Peer Support Communities

Today, Magellan Health Services Inc. (NASDAQ: MGLN) announced a strategic relationship with OneHealth® Solutions, Inc. to provide its customers with an online and mobile platform supporting several personalized solutions for topics such as addiction, autism family support and eating disorders. The technology-enabled services include a dedicated support staff to increase engagement through personalized welcome messages, access to peer health coaches, community managers, expert discussions, and live online meetings and group chats where members can learn and interact with guest experts to drive positive behavior change. Online support is also accessible on mobile phones (Android and Apple iOS), which gives members more opportunities to benefit from real-time peer support within their busy lives.

As a result of steadily increasing social media trends, better options are needed to engage members in partnership with providers through integrated online peer and care coaching. Innovative social networking solutions will position providers to deliver immediate access to quality care, reduce side effects, and promote the attainment of new skills that enhance long-term outcomes.

“We believe peer-to-peer support is the cornerstone of empowerment and recovery providing authentic empathy, validation, and resources for those struggling with mental health issues,” said Laurie Gondek, Senior Vice President, Behavioral Health Product Innovation, Magellan Health Services. “By offering online access to peer support communities for all of our customers – EAP, employers, health plans and government entities (federal and state), Magellan can support member preferences in the form of social media and online simulations for those not likely to engage in traditional phone-based and face-to-face care services.”

Online peer support also provides Magellan the ability to further enhance its existing support for medical integration. The strategic relationship with OneHealth Solutions will evolve over time to provide support and communities for a wide range of chronic behavioral and medical conditions including, diabetes, stress reduction, asthma, obesity and general caregiver/family support beyond autism, which are available on the OneHealth platform.

Participating Magellan members can now interact 24/7 with members in the following behavioral health communities:

  • Addiction (forms of substance abuse and chemical dependency, and process addictions such as eating, sex, gambling, spending, etc.), and certain Family Support (Al-Anon, Adult Children of Alcoholics, Nar-Anon, and Codependents Anonymous)
  • Eating Disorders (e.g. Anorexia and/or Bulimia)
  • Depression
  • Anxiety

Peer Support Pilot

In 2012, Magellan conducted a pilot program with a large health plan utilizing OneHealth Solutions’ addiction platform and peer support. The pilot resulted in very positive outcomes:

  • The duration of engagement over a several month period exceeded expectations by two fold
  • The repeated number of times each participant engaged with the solution online was significantly higher than our experience for many other programs
  • The Net Promoter Score for members who would recommend the services to others was double what we expected and higher than industry averages

OneHealth Solutions CEO Bruce Springer said, “Magellan’s member engagement metrics and pilot results demonstrate a high degree of interest by members to utilize online peer support services as a means for sustained recovery and health management. Magellan is the first behavioral health provider to offer technology-enabled peer support and community-based services to its entire customer base. We are excited about this strategic relationship and looking forward to more innovation as we implement solutions more broadly with Magellan to improve health outcomes.”

In addition to all the benefits, IoT is also bringing new kind of customer experience challenges - cars that unlock themselves, thermostats turning houses into saunas and baby video monitors broadcasting over the internet. This list can only increase because while IoT services should be intuitive and simple to use, the delivery ecosystem is a myriad of potential problems as IoT explodes complexity. So finding a performance issue is like finding the proverbial needle in the haystack.

In today's uber-connected, consumer-centric, cloud-enabled, insights-driven, multi-device, global world, the focus of solutions has shifted from the product that is sold to the person who is buying the product or service. Enterprises have rebranded their business around the consumers of their products. The buyer is the person and the focus is not on the offering. The person is connected through multiple devices, wearables, at home, on the road, and in multiple locations, sometimes simultaneously...

We all know the latest numbers: Gartner, Inc. forecasts that 6.4 billion connected things will be in use worldwide in 2016, up 30 percent from last year, and will reach 20.8 billion by 2020. We're rapidly approaching a data production of 40 zettabytes a day – more than we can every physically store, and exabytes and yottabytes are just around the corner. For many that’s a good sign, as data has been proven to equal money – IF it’s ingested, integrated, and analyzed fast enough. Without real-ti...

I wanted to gather all of my Internet of Things (IOT) blogs into a single blog (that I could later use with my University of San Francisco (USF) Big Data “MBA” course). However as I started to pull these blogs together, I realized that my IOT discussion lacked a vision; it lacked an end point towards which an organization could drive their IOT envisioning, proof of value, app dev, data engineering and data science efforts. And I think that the IOT end point is really quite simple…
A critical component of any IoT project is what to do with all the data being generated. This data needs to be captured, processed, structured, and stored in a way to facilitate different kinds of queries. Traditional data warehouse and analytical systems are mature technologies that can be used to handle certain kinds of queries, but they are not always well suited to many problems, particularly when there is a need for real-time insights.

Extracting business value from Internet of Things (IoT) data doesn’t happen overnight. There are several requirements that must be satisfied, including IoT device enablement, data analysis, real-time detection of complex events and automated orchestration of actions. Unfortunately, too many companies fall short in achieving their business goals by implementing incomplete solutions or not focusing on tangible use cases. In his general session at @ThingsExpo, Dave McCarthy, Director of Products...
