AOL Gives Consumers Their Lifestream

AOL Inc. (NYSE: AOL) today announced that its popular social aggregator, Lifestream, will now be available via desktop as a standalone product as well as on the iPhone and Android mobile platforms. Lifestream allows users to view status messages and posts from their friends on Facebook, Twitter, Digg, YouTube and much more – all in one place. In addition, Lifestream will now include updates from foursquare and MySpace. Since Lifestream’s launch within AIM a few months ago, usage has soared to nearly 2 million users* making it one of the largest aggregators of social content on the Web.

Lifestream will allow users to post an update once and distribute to all of their social networks simultaneously, eliminating the repetitive process of having to post multiple updates to various networks. It will also allow complete control to users as it relates to distribution of their updates and posts. Additional features of Lifestream will now include the ability to sign in with your Facebook ID, new search capabilities, the option to mute certain people or terms and the ability to add pictures or locations to posts and updates. Additionally, Lifestream allows the ability to “follow” a specific location – currently, an offering unique only to Lifestream.

“In an age where users are completely inundated with information online, Lifestream is all about creating a unique and simple experience where you can view all of your social content and status updates in one place,” said Brad Garlinghouse, President, Consumer Applications, AOL. “To date, nobody has done this well and we think it’s a huge opportunity for AOL to surprise our consumers and the industry at large with an incredibly compelling social experience.”

In addition to publishing status messages, moods, photos, videos and blogs from MySpace, Lifestream will now incorporate user check-ins from foursquare, allowing the updates to be shared with friends across various networks as well as letting users view their foursquare friends’ activities.

“Lifestream users obviously value the benefit of accessing all of their essential social updates in one place,” said Naveen Selvadurai, co-founder of foursquare. “We’re excited to be a part of this initial offering and hope to leverage this integration to continue to build on our expanding user base.”

Lifestream will be in beta for the next several weeks and is currently available for download here: lifestream.aol.com.
