US to produce Apple’s new MacPro

By

apple-logoApple has been working on a new device called the MacPro. One of the biggest selling points, for me, is that it will be produced in the US. This is good news for the US economy. Maybe it will be a trend.

But as techies we should focus on device features.

The Mac Pro is a cylindrical desktop that was previewed in Apple’s June 2013 conference. The specs of this desktop include a next generation 3.7GHz Intel Xeon E5 processor, AMD Fire Pro graphics, 12GB of RAM, 6 Thunderbolt 2 ports, 256GB of SSD, and 528GB/s total bandwidth… just to name a few. Apple also claims that this model is 70% more power efficient and extremely quiet compared their previous Mac desktops. This new desktop is well equipped to handle high quality video work, graphic design, audio recording, and mixing. This desktop is going to be released some time in December of 2013, and will have a starting price of $2,999.

Last December Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, announced that they will be pumping $100M into a MAC manufacturing facility in the US. Yes, this is great news but with the low “production volumes of the MacPro, and the overall cost, the ‘Made in the USA’ label gives (Apple) a good marketing piece, while making good business sense,” said IHS’s Senior Principal Analyst Andrew Rassweiler. I agree with Andrew, this move may add a little more money into the US economy but it is mostly a positive marketing and business tactic for Apple. Also, only a small percent of all Apple computers sold are MacPros. Take this into consideration along with the fact that Apple’s computer sales dropped 200K in the past year. So it is not exactly out of this world that Apple is producing this $3,000 MacPro in the US.

Even though this MacPro’s sales probably won’t be out of this world, having a manufacturing facility in the US is great press for Apple. Although I am abnormally attached to my MacBook Pro, I am definitely going to check out the new MacPro in stores when it comes out. Hopefully with this new facility Apple can begin to transition manufacturing Mac and other Apple products into the states. I know at this time it is not financially rational to make this switch, but I hope it can be possible in the future.
